Some bad news on the Alzheimer's drug development front. Large phase 3 trials of the anti-Alzheimer's drug tarenfurbil showed it did not have any better outcomes than a placebo. The trial involved 1684 patients with mild Alzheimer's disease of which 1046 completed the trial. The drug was designed to reduce the levels of a brain protein called beta-amyloid which has been implicated as having a major role in Alzheimer's disease. Phase 2 trials of tarenfurbil showed promising results showing an improvement cognition among mildly affected patients so this is a disappointing development.
